Weekend End of the Month? The Receipts are Here Cats and Kittens Boa On the Loose Blog Policies |
We're Back!!! - After 6 months of no blog ... the policy has come back and we are now back up and running. I missed you! I
will be posting shortly, but you must read this Social Media usage Policy - OSAS - Policy
S.P. NO: CrS-C38 [pdf 142kb] completed by the City of Owen Sound. July
11, 2012 Blog Policies - The years have rolled one into another, and I have been blogging about the Owen Sound Animal Shelter for more than 6 years. I started with my first blog on February 1, 2006. My blogs have kept the residence of Owen Sound and friends of the Shelter informed on the Shelters day-to-day operations. But, after a meeting at Owen Sound City Hall today it has been determined that OSAS requires a policy to govern the use and administration of social media, including the ever popular OSAS blog. Therefore, the OSAS blog will be temporarily suspended to allow staff some time to put these policies in place – OSAS will resume blogging again in the near future. Don't forget, that you can also catch us on Facebook at: Click this link ...» If you have any questions, concerns or input regarding the above, you can direct them to: Kristen M. Van

10, 2012 Boa On the Loose - The one radio as heard today on my travels.
This reminds me to remind those unaware that the city of Owen Sound does have an exotic pet bylaw, (click here to view by-law) and it for reasons such as lost Boa's that we we have one. If you are considering adding a new pet to your family that is not perhaps your typical dog cat or pocket pet, please review the by-law before bringing it home to be on the safe
side. And maybe it may be wise to also consider adequate housing for this pet, nobody likes a lost Boa. July 9, 2012 Cats and Kittens - It was like a breath of fresh air to see two cats adopted, today, who were with us quite some time. A breath in that it gave us a little breathing room as cat adoption numbers have not been nearly enough to make me comfortable with space. As always June has, once again, been a challenge with kittens popping up, and being turned in, and four to five adoptions were needed to clear up a cage. It is a struggle, normally, to keep them going out as they come in, but kitten season makes this so much worse. The toughest part perhaps watching some of the older wonderful cats wait and wait. Chubby Bunny for example had been waiting since Easter :( I said to her only yesterday "you know Bunny, when you put yourself back in the cage after cleaning, you have been here too long"! These words apparently worked magic, as today she found her forever home. Tomorrow, I will say this to each cat in the hopes that this will bring them luck as well. Please
let everyone know, that we have cats and kittens available at the Shelter.
By networking this, maybe we can get a few more of these sweet babies out! July 6, 2012 The Receipts are Here - If you are one of our wonderful supporters who has given to our Spay/Neuter, Medical Fund over the last few months or weeks (perhaps at one of our fundraising events), please know your receipt is now in the mail.
If you are a supporter waiting and do not get your receipt, kindly call or email in the next few weeks. It is a challenge to locate you months from now to get these to you if you move or the receipts are lost in the mail. As each contribution is appreciated we want each to be properly
recognized. With each receipt, we do of course, send our tremendous thanks.
We do what we do only with help from you!
July 4, 2012 End of the Month? - Following yesterday's blog about so many stray dogs, it occurred to me that perhaps I had written one, exactly the same, not so long ago. I realize that there has been a definite increase in the numbers of strays over the last few years which are the result of harder economic times and therefore more dogs are tossed. I realize that it may be some time before this changes too. I have learned that the seasons directly affect the strays that roam, as does the weather, and owner's busy schedules. I have assumed this is why we gather stays in clusters. One week many; one week none. However, it was only today that I decided to count
them and perhaps make a note to see how things are changing officially. For the month of June we gathered a whopping 28.
This is not spring, not fall, not Christmas and truthfully one of the hottest months I have seen in a long time.
So, dogs run less in the heat - this concerns me, as the natural causes of being a stray just shrunk considerably.
The alternative is not one I care to think too much on. July 3, 2012 Long Weekend - Well, we prepared for it, expected it, hoped we would be wrong, but anticipated being right. It's not always good to be right, as was in this case. As we assumed the strays came pouring in, and as of 9am this morning we were up 9 new dogs. Nine wonderful friendly kind and giving dogs who simply got lost, who slipped away, got spooked perhaps and ended up running. I'm thankful we have them, but sad to have them need me. I do wish for a day where there is no need for the job I do. I
hope that all are reclaimed and returned to responsible loving owners. I fear that this may be unrealistic, but
hope once again I am wrong.
