Dog Found - News
Release February 29, 2012
Dog in Biting Incident Identified
An appeal for assistance has been successful to identify a dog in a biting incident earlier this week in Owen Sound. The owner of the dog came forward. The dog is identified as healthy and current for rabies shots. As a precaution, the dog will be put under confinement procedures for the remainder of the observation period. All dogs involved in biting incidents are confined regardless of vaccine status.
Public
Health thanks the owner of the dog for coming forward and the media and
the community for bringing this incident to a successful conclusion.
Public Health anticipates no further action in this matter. Feb
28, 2012 Another
Dog Bite - Yet another plea from the Grey Bruce Health Unit looking for the owners of a dog that bit someone.
This time it happened in Owen Sound as a woman was getting out of a cab in the alley behind the TD Canada Trust branch downtown. Feb
24, 2012 Zippity do da- There is someone missing a red, male Lab mix, 1-2 years of age from the East side of Owen Sound. This someone has clearly failed to secure him with proper methods as we picked him up as a stray. There appears to be a few various attempts made, this I assume by the big purple clip and two plastic zip ties. These, I guess; failed. Sadly, these attempts to secure the dog failed to secure some identification with it.
He does not sport any ID and, I do believe, a tag may have been easier to secure than whatever those clips were joined to. I have said, time and again, that the first thing we check for on strays is the TAG!!! and then, we look for microchip! I cannot be more plain as to how we identify stray dogs. It is truly in the dog's best interest and ours to have ID on your pets when you know they will be outside of the house. We are waiting for this dog's someone to report him missing - we have a full house and are under pressure to see that he is reunited with his owner. It sure would have been nice to have a reclaiming potential. I cannot stress enough the importance of identification. If you love your dog, want your dog to find you in the event he wanders away, please give them some BLING! Now, while on your trip to the hardware store stop and see me for that
tag - it still isn't too late. I also could have hooked these owners up with
a better control option. It is what I do. I suspect now this method is done for this dog. Feb

22, 2012 It was the Best of Times, It was... - When the pager starts singing at 3:30 am it makes for a very long day. By 10:00 am two dogs and a stray cat had been gathered. By 12 noon these numbers crept to three dogs and two cats. Sadly, my day continued this way, and by 3:00 pm we were up three found dogs, and three cats. Luckily, the calls and the chaos stopped there - it had been twelve hours of driving, chasing, gathering and phoning - totally exhausting. The physical side was nothing in comparison to the mental exhaustion of six more homeless. We will now try to find where they belong, hope they get reclaimed, care for love and make available if not reclaimed, medicate and vet and then finally find them forever homes. It is sadly a much longer process than 12 hours, and honestly more like 2 weeks.
Luckily, each day is not like this day, and I will be crossing all parts that this will be the last for a while.
It is always best to have the others go out before more come in. This was
not even possible today! Feb
21, 2012 Lilo and Stitch - Ohana means family, and family means nobody gets left behind. This is a saying taken from a Disney film titled 'Lilo and Stitch'. A movie about a lost alien and the girl who takes him in until she can rehome him. Stitch is not the most pleasant of beings and makes things very trying for Lilo, but as she knows family is forever she sticks through until Stitch is safe and sound. It was a thought in my mind on Monday, in lieu of
Family Day and it occurred randomly in my thoughts. I thought of the potential
message there and wondered why I hadn't thought of it before. The message of keeping the
trouble 'Stitch' as a family member is the thing to do is very touching. I sure wish I saw more of it in the real world too.
In a time in which so many are tossed out and left behind, again the story
sure makes for a better reality.

16, 2012 Spring is in the Air - Spring is springing! Ask me how I know? Dogs are blowing their winter coats, cats are all coming into season. One live raccoon spotted, and this live skunk.
Five concerned calls about wandering wildlife, and sadly two deceased gathered off the streets. One roaming male dog yesterday, and another today. Any questions? We always know before the weather man knows, and nope we don't need a groundhog. Although this winter has been
awfully tricky with mother nature messing things all up; I can assure you
Spring is approaching! Feb
15, 2012 Dog Floating in River - Yesterday, I caught the tail end of a news report of a dog falling through the ice. (Pardon the pun) I considered using this as a blog and reminding everyone that ice is very unstable, unsafe and that this is one more reason to keep control of our pets. As I was unable to locate the news report, I decided against it, and that after finding this I would use it. I no longer need to find it. Today, we had our own pooch pulled from the river. A small elderly beagle mix, with impaired vision, impaired hearing and arthritic, wandered out on his own.
It is uncertain how long he wandered or how he ended up in the icy cold water, but it is certain the stars were looking after him as witnesses spotted him, a rescue then was carried through, and this lucky fella none the worst after his ordeal. It took a little warming, and a little TLC, a check by our Vet, and he was good to go. Our next panic was to find an owner in the hopes his near drowning was accidental. We prayed this was the case, terribly afraid that an intentional river drop would be a shear heartache. Sadly, it would not be the first senior pet dropped into the water as a means to end it that I had witnessed. It was hours later before our fears were put to rest.
This boy was missed. He had slipped out and wandered away. He was not gone long before he was seen swimming, they were eager to have him back and excited he was
OK. He was one of the few to survive such a case. As we celebrate his being safe, sound and
home. I send out the reminder I had hoped to - keep an eye on your pets
and remember the ice is thin and the water is moving very fast. Feb
13, 2012 Valentines - With the eve of the day of love here, I thought perhaps I would remind you that if you have a little extra love to give this Valentine's Day, there are homeless animals in need. Love is easily shared with your visit, your cash donation, your offering of treats, pet foods, blankets. Love is shared with hugs and cuddles, or a friendly conversation. Love is often returned to you easily by those living homeless who appreciate any kindness with their whole being. When their lives are otherwise rather depressing and high stressed your love can make the difference needed to help them go home. Nobody wants a depressed or stressed pet. You may also give to the spay/neuter fund. This could be in honour of a person or pet, in loving memory or just for yourself. This is essential to our operations ensuring each goes home. A great gift idea for that special someone! There is nothing more pleasing
than seeing happy pets, other than perhaps seeing them go home. Give yourself the gift of happiness when you give it to them. This I also love :) Feb
10, 2012 More Fixes - There were 13 more pets altered Friday and that sure made for a busy day, but as always a great day. A normal day busy with feeding cleaning, med giving, walking, emails, phone calls, site updates, and public relations becomes super busy with calls to gather animals is tossed in and becomes nearly insane when surgical prep, surgical monitor, and post operative care are in there too.
Thankfully I have a great team. Although we are exhausted, hungry, smelling of things not pleasant, and slightly battered, we smile. And there are 13 more who will not reproduce and 13 more are ready to go home.
Only one thing is better, seeing them go home, and that is soon to come. We work hard at that too. Feb
9, 2012 Ms. Frosty Update - Hooray! Hooray Frosty is doing OK! Truthfully, I had few doubts. Her people, friends I know and chat with often, who were prior Ferret owners, who spoke with me throughout her recovery, were well suited. She is a fighter who had over come incredible odds would be fine in most places, however, she touched my heart and as with all of those we save, I worry awaiting updates.
Frosty, is fantastic! Fatter everyday, playful busy and ever entertaining she is soooo well. Jump up and down with me! There is contentment in her face as she struggles no more, and lives a life of Ferret luxury.
She eats till full, sleeps as much as she likes, and has her very own box of toys!
Her new bff is an older Golden who not only tolerates her, but welcomes her cuddles.
This so very adorable - I am very pleased. Feb
8, 2012 Still Searching - And then we hear nothing :( I have no idea if Paris the Poodle has been found or if she's still running, lost or in hiding. I have no idea if her owner is searching, who they may have asked, or if there are any updates. I have not heard if there have been sightings, and I haven't spotted any dogs of a Poodle description. Sadly, I have no answers. While I wait holding my breath and crossing my parts, I send vibes in the hopes
that as I type this she is warm and cozy in her home. Feb
7, 2012 Lost Poodle - Early this am, I received word that a black Poodle was seen running in the Kemble area. This poodle straying and running scared from those that had spotted it. My search for it a short while later turned up nothing. At this point we hoped for the best in that perhaps it had run home or to its master. A short while later, I spoke with a distraught owner. Paris the Poodle was acquired only four days earlier. She is unfamiliar with her territory and also does not recognize her family or her keepers. Unsocialized to people perhaps she was running scared. Her owner wanted tips and advice on how to locate and capture her. Sadly, this would normally be where the owner knows the dog best. I wish I had a magic trick, my job would be so much easier. I may be able to help gather her, set a trap for her or offer some wrestling skills if we can locate her. Please keep your eyes open for
Paris. History proves a dog running scared may run for days, weeks ...
gosh, I hope this is not the case! Feb
6, 2012 Ms. Frosty - We did it! We did it! We did it! Once again, we have taken the challenge of saving one we were not so sure could be saved.
We stared at death in face, and said 'nope, I don't think so', and won. Frosty was emaciated, broken, starving and frozen, with no desire to eat drink and is now fixed, fattened and has found a home.
There is no greater thrill than being successful at saving a life. Although, I suppose with each adoption we save, it's hard for us to see it, as it is really what we do most days. However, when we can see them touch death's door and then see them ready to go home the reality of what we have done is so much more apparent.
There is no greater thanks
than seeing my new friend happy. It is after all why we do what we do. One pill, one kibble, one injection at a time we moved forward together. I promised her it would be worth it, and
together we did it. Feb
2, 2012 Underdog - We found him hiding curled up below the steps of the porch. They claimed he had been there for days. It seemed odd to me a pup would hide and crouch below without reason. As I peaked in at him I was guessing at most he was four months old. Only fear would drive him below, and keep him there. Surely he would be hungry? It took some coaxing to gather him, and when we did I noticed he was so very thin and dehydrated. Their assumptions proved to be likely true, this scared pup had been in hiding too long. There is little that hurts the heart worst than a starving puppy. In fun, to make things more manageable I named him underdog. There's no need to fear - Underdog is here! [taken from Wikipedia] Yes, the dog found under the porch is deserving of such a name, but, a black and tan dog fearful is perfect for it.
A cartoon once of a Superdog sporting a cape who speaks in rhyme was out to save his friends from a world of crime (oops now I'm rhyming) is best known for the phrase above.
Perfect now as he is off without fear to his new home. Feb
1, 2012 Dog Tags - Today, I got my dog tags, and now it's your turn. A new year marks a new registry, and if you have not yet purchased your dog tag(s), you may want to put this on your do ASAP list. Each municipality has varying time lines for "needed to be purchased by", but it's safe to say, you will not be penalized now as it's not too late. But, if you wait you may be penalized. Prices in Owen Sound, for example, go up March 31st. I preach the need for dog tags often and the reasons given are:
For years I have said it, and most of you recognize the need and do what you need to do. For the others perhaps who are still not convinced, and need a gentle push I could remind them charges can be laid for failing to licence your animal and this makes us both unhappy. I could offer a little peer
pressure? We are all doing it! Or perhaps a dare? I dare you! Whichever works,
it's now your turn.
