Cat Adoptions

Cat Adoptions - Finally! On Friday, I said out loud for all to hear, "we really need a good cat adoption day, you know the kind of day where five cats go home kind of days - it has been way too long since we had one of those, and we could sure use the catch up".

In knowing the spring pile up is fast approaching, the pressure is growing. No kill means they stay till they move, and sadly the hard part about this sometimes means we work under pressure to move them. [OK reality is it's all the time!]

February is a quiet month always and adoptions are slow. This makes spring pile up tougher. However, those words, were magic, and I'm excited to say, five adoptions happened HOORAY! Next time perhaps I should set the bar a little higher, imagine if I had made ten happen? Wow, that would be a dream! Thrilled with a little breathing room and a little less pressure phew! Finally!

Grey County OPP are investigating a complaint from a Grey Highlands man that his dogs had been shot and left on the side of a road.

Police say the man was made aware that his two dogs were injured and laying on Concession Road 8 northwest of Maxwell.

The man took the injured dogs to a local veterinarian where they were treated.

It was there that it was confirmed the dogs had been hit in the legs by multiple shot gun pellets.

One of the dogs has died and the other may require amputations.

The incident happened Monday [Feb 21/11] but the incident was not reported to police until Wednesday.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Grey County OPP or Crime Stoppers.

Fun Facts and Stewart - The biggest dog here at the Shelter was a Neapolitan Mastiff named Gina. She so big a double cage barely fit her laying down. The oddest homeless perhaps was Big Igg the six foot iguana, or Cheech and Chong the Degus, or maybe that chinchilla? Once, we had a homeless Dove named Daisy, and a Chicken named Sweetie.

Until today, our smallest had been a hamster named Chevy, even a few mice, baby rats and guinea pigs. However, today, Stewart came to me.

Stewart by far takes the cheese as the smallest. He is "Stewart Little" a young white mouse. Named for the children's movie about a mouse who was adopted by a family as a child, what irony.

This mouse not entirely homeless, as he has with him his own home, does need a place to relocate to. Mice are short term starter pets, are entertaining and very social. And, Stewart is great to handle. He now holds the record for the smallest ever at the Shelter. Hopefully he will be a short timer with us too.

Cocoa  - The story, as I know it, is that he was found wandering on Valentine's Day. A smallish, chocolate coloured dog, perhaps of Spaniel mix. He is an older dog who had perhaps wandered off with limited hearing or vision? His finders attempted to locate an owner. I first learned of him when they contacted me. Days later, I received an email in which I had discovered he had been taken in by the animal control. I remember hoping he perhaps had some ID and that the finders had not noticed like a microchip or a tattoo?

Today, when he came to me after his time was up, I could not help but be heartbroken for him. Time had passed since Valentine's Day and if there were those that loved him they sure were not looking in the right places. I was sad he didn't even have a name.

As I did my 100th tattoo today, (well #100 as we have done more than 600 animals but now we tattoo them as well), I thought of him.  I could not help but wonder if ID would have helped him.

Please look at his picture and see if you know him? If your considering an older, quiet, smaller dog consider my new friend that I now call Cocoa.

Charlie Brown Update  - We received a great update on Charlie Brown:

Dear Owen Sound Animal Shelter, We just thougt we'd let you know that Hamish (aka Charlie Brown) has settled in very nicely on the farm here.

We already can't imagine life without him! He especially loves to cross-country ski and play for hours with his big sister Maisie.

Since he came here over a month ago he has grown so much and learned lots of new tricks. Thank you so much for connecting us with our perfect little puppy!!! The McCarthys

This has made me soooo very happy. He holds a special place in my heart. Thank you for the update. Kisses to my boy for me!

Hello Owen Sound, Maggie is sending you 1st anniversary best wishes from Ottawa. We thought you might like to see her progress through the first year. I’m sure you remember her as a very anxious dog who had barked herself horse and was not good with other dogs.

A year later, Maggie is lovely dog with a heart of gold, walks very well on the leash, has her own personal doggy friend that she loves, and has pretty much given up on her anxiety.

Within the first month, maggie is getting out off leash and getting plenty of exercise to work with her anxiety.

By spring, Maggie has pretty much stopped the uncontrolled barking. she’s gained weight, eating well and sleeping.

How can you not love a face like that????

Maggie and her friend for life Drake. We adoped drake in the summer and after some work with the dogs, maggie not only accepts drake as her pack member, but loves him in a very doggy way .  Drake adores maggie, and does everything she tells him to.

Another walk in the woods with drake and a friend. Maggie is leader of the pack with these two youngsters. Maggie is telling them to hurry up, they have places to go.

We take maggie and drake to gooddogrescue for bording occassionally where maggie has become a favorite with the staff…she so good and easy to manage in a situation with plenty of other dogs.

Maggie has come a long way in a year. Not too shabby for an old girl. I hope we have many years to come with her. Thanks again Owen Sound ~ Candace & Phil

Wildlife is Waking Up - Today, on my travels, I saw three squirrels, one dead skunk, smelled a third, and a possum climbing a snow bank.

The wildlife is awake, they are moving and sadly confused and irritated. They do not have rabies. They are sleepy headed and bushy tailed. Please drive with caution. Normally night time is travel time, however these days anything goes.

As the one who picks up the remains and who deals with the blessing and heartache, I am asking you to be careful. As the temperature continues to go up and down, and hopefully back up, think of them and the confusion this brings. Am I awake? Am I asleep? Time to go? Time to stay? Wander which way? Be prepared for surprises. They sure are not.

DOLA - Local radio report

Wednesday, February 16, 2011
Dog Seized Man Charged
Grey County by Michael McDonald

Grey County OPP executed a search warrant under the Dog Owners Liability Act (DOLA) on a Chatsworth area property.

Officers attended the residence southwest of Chatsworth this morning (WED) and with the assistance of local animal control officers removed six dogs from the property.

The 60 year old owner is facing charges including breaching a court order, six counts of owning a dangerous animal, and six counts of failing to prevent a dog from attacking a person or animal.

He will appear in Owen Sound court February 28th.

I should mention here as the calls of inquiry have already begun that this is not an area the Owen Sound Animal Shelter services. These dogs are not at our facility, nor am I aware of any details. I do also have many questions.

I wish the best for the dogs in any case, and will post any details as I learn them which potentially will be on the radio as well.

Spring is Coming - It's happening, slowly, ever so slightly, but it's happening. As I always know before the rest of you and it's not because I speak groundhog (although I do) once again I should announce it. Spring is in the air!

The unaltered cats are fussing, the dog calls running increasing, winter coats thinning, dog poop in the snow is peeking, and the wildlife calls beginning.

Today, I met a deceased raccoon on the side of a bare road. I was saddened to see it had met its' demise I was also slightly happy to see they were now moving. As things are about to get busier for us, as we spring into the new season I will still be celebrating the sunshine and a break in the cold temperatures.

We are not quite there yet, but I know it's around the corner - mother nature is telling me. Keep an eye on your pets, they will tell you too. While you're looking, double check that ID is secured etc, tis the season.

Happy Valentine's - Here are a couple of emails I received...

On February 25th 2009 my fiancé Rob and I decided we wanted a furry addition to our little family. We knew from the beginning of our search we wanted to adopt a cat from the shelter to give someone a chance at a new home. Right away I decided I had to get Mia and although her picture on the website was a little deceiving ( it was just a picture of her face and when we saw her in person we quickly realized there was a whole lot more of her to love) we took her home the moment we held her for the first time. The first night went okay although it was obvious she was quite nervous about her new home and spent a few hours alone in the bathtub. She quickly became more than a pet to us.

In late January 2010 my fiancé stopped into the shelter to donate some cat food. I had read to him the story about Saturday and Eve and their horrible state after being left tied to a tree at Harrison Park in the bitter cold. When he saw that poor little cat he knew he needed to bring her home. He visited her three times at the shelter and the third time she was well enough physically to be brought home. Right away she made it her own and walked around like she owned the place. She's not really a lap cat unless she wants to be but she does cuddle beside us, sleeps with us sometimes, and likes to make her presence known when it's dinner time.

She's taught Mia some bad tricks when it comes to begging, and they do fight occasionally, although I think this is exactly like a sister relationship would normally be if they were humans. On Saturday February 12th 2011, we celebrated our first year with Eve as a part of our family. On February 25th we will celebrate Mia's second.

They have both made such a great difference to our family, and changed my not so much of a cat person
fiancé into someone who couldn't even remember not enjoying having cats around (he was always raised with dogs in his family).

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you all at the shelter for all the hard work you do and give you an update on our girls. We love our girls like they are our own children and couldn't imagine our home without them in it. I've attached a picture of Mia and Eve begging for a treat which is a common sight in our home. We've enjoyed having them grow with us and look forward to spending many more years with them as part of the family. Thanks again for all you do. Sarah Morris and Rob

And,

Sawyer Update - Hooray for happy tails! You know I love them. They are the reason I do what I do, to see those loved and happy in great homes. Each and every creature that comes through my doors finds a place in my heart, and forever I hope that it works out for them.

Some sink into my heart a little deeper, especially those who are broken, damaged, or special needs, as are those who spend longer with me or those who spend time in my home.

By now everyone knows about my foster dog in October who had a dozen puppies, who stayed with me (all twelve) until they were placed in homes. Having been part of my life for ten weeks, having seen them take their first breath, first steps, eat their first meal they earned a bigger spot perhaps with me.

I assume no news is good news as time goes on but I must admit happy tails are so much better! Check out Sawyer's happy picture admire his smile as I do. Hooray for happy tails!

Lassie - It was one of my childhood favorite shows. Littlest Hobo first (interesting isn't it) and Lassie second. Without a dog growing up found them fascinating. Lassie so well trained, could do all the things the humans could do just about and was always doing something to make me smile.

Today, while doing patrols I was passed on the right by a vehicle. When I peeked over, my eyes were drawn to the gorgeous pair of collies in the vehicle. One in the front left seat, and one behind it. Yes, you may need to read that again? I needed to look twice. And then a third time. And then needed to take a picture. In the seat which was the drivers side sat Lassie. Behind sat another. Here is where I mention we were doing 50 or so up the road and not parked. Blinking, rubbing my eyes and I was certain I was confused I drove along side so I could figure it out.

Then I spotted the man on the right driving. It was a great laugh, and it seems the vehicle was right-hand drive, in any case it was an awesome. So out-of-place on the streets of Owen Sound.

Scandal - There is nothing worse than turning your back on a dog who is outside in the cold and is hungry. Anyone who has half a heart can agree this is a heartbreaker.

This time last year we were involved in hours and hours of patrols, searching and trekking through deep snow. We were setting live traps, we were leaving food, and the area had been petitioned. Posters were out. Everything we could possibly think of had been done. Scandal a 13 year old Golden Retriever had been lost Labour Day weekend of 2009.

She was  afraid of fireworks bolted from her cottage, and remained missing from then on in. Sightings of this dog began around Christmas 2009, and continued on and on for months.

We tried chasing, catching, the owner tried too, search parties went out and continued. The live trap was set off once, by whom we are not sure, but other than that we had nothing. Then the calls stopped. With no leads, with no further progression, I had no choice but to end my search. Nothing could have been sadder than picking up the trap that day we called it quits.

No dog does well in the cold, no dog does well without food, and this dog, a senior had the roughest of roads ahead of her. If I had a magic wand, I would have used it, and potentially at this time I would have given up my right arm for her to be captured.

And, now we are back at it again with sightings of a Golden seen running, in the same neighbourhood, with the same identifying features. We do wonder if it is her.

The odds of it being her are slim. But, I am hanging onto that hope. Hanging onto that small glimmer of chance we will be successful this time around. The thoughts of seeing that dog warm and dry and in a loving home is keeping us motivated.

With all heart I have hopes of catching her, please send the vibes for the same. Whomever it is, it needs gathered. But, gosh I sure hope it's our Scandal. For blog with picture...»

Roxy - Roxy was seized in Oshawa on January 10, 2011 after being tied up at a convenience store. Officials believe Roxy is a Pit Bull. The owner says that Roxy is a Boxer mix. There is a video on Global News and check here to read the Durham Region News ...»

As well, Oshawa is holding Scarlette on death row... visit the Facebook page...» and sign the petition. On September 29, 2010, Scarlette -- whose owners say is a boxer/lab cross -- wandered away from home when the door was accidentally left open. She was picked up by the City, identified as an illegal pit bull and is now facing a potential death sentence. Her distraught owner hasn't seen the dog in more than four months.

Moogly and Munjo - One cat is difficult enough to place, make it a mature black cat and it's even harder. Throw in a black mature friend with it and it becomes a challenge. Luckily, I enjoy a challenge.

Moogly and Munjo were left behind when their owner moved away and found it a challenge to place them herself and instead opted to leave them behind. Luckily, we did not share that same decision. Instead, we tried and tried. Nobody wanted to split them. This is always a struggle in knowing that splitting them would mean placing them faster but also mean splitting them apart. It has always been our policy to try to keep together those which are bonded provided the extra time it may take does not affect them emotionally. We try to take into perspective which causes the least distress. Homeless is bad enough.

Today, thankfully as there always is with time, someone came sharing the same concerns. They too did not want to see them parted. They loved both as a pair. Both went home together. As I rejoice in a great adoption, I am relieved as I know already someone has cared enough to do what was best for them.

Snow - Snow - Snow - And then it snowed! And snowed! And snowed! I heard the prediction from Willy, but I have a feeling it will take six weeks for all that snow to melt.

Snow days means no adoptions, as reality is you can't get to us. It also means no surrenders and less chance for calls. Unfortunately, the no adoptions sure bring us down, so on our end we wait and cross our parts for an early spring. Sadly, the surrenders and numbers of unwanted go up. As we brace for the warmer weather on one side we do dread it on the other.

Keeping positive, I will hope this spring is positive and hope adoptions will go up and numbers to come in go down. That will bring sunshine through the clouds. Here is Willy's prediction straight from Wiarton...»

Stevie Wonder [Sparky] Update - Today once again I was reminded of why I do what I do. As always the celebration with a great update for one who really needed a second chance makes it all worthwhile.
Today came an update from Wonders mom! And wonder now Sparky is doing wonderful in his new home. He who came to us blind as a stray, was clearly not in the best of homes as those that had owned him had lost him and failed to come for him or had tossed him.
Loosing him the better of the two scenarios its still pretty awful.

Here is what Joyce had to say:

I want to congragulate you one the valuable work that you do......I know how hard it is!!!!!

We love Sparky, he is really coming into his own.  He jumps around and plays whenever he has space and is probably one of the gentlest natured dogs I have ever met.

We have a very large cat the is about his size and he has taken to snuggling up with him to keep warm.  Thanks again very much and I hope to be able to send pictures and come for a visit before too long. ~  Joyce

I can see between the lines of what she writes, this mom would do neither.
Celebrate with me with this update.
