Odie   -  The Shelter takes in animals that are sometimes hard to place. I know that there are also times when the Shelter takes in animals that go the next day! However, there are also those which come in on a request that I know will be difficult to place, those that I know no one else will take (other shelters also get to pick too) and those which I know are likely otherwise doomed.

On the opposite end of that was the Mae adoption yesterday another who also came from Windsor. He unlike she much older, quite old, and he needing a little TLC. Odie was an older male beagle with cloudy eyes, a grey muzzle, and a few bumps and lumps and not easily adoptable.

With each request comes information, and a picture, smart move on their part, as his old man face was quick to haunt me. I could see the kindness behind those clouds, and could tell his heart was pure. I knew that his situation was bad for him, and that he needed me to pull him. I knew that the odds were not good for him if I refused him. My mind had little to do with the decision to help him, it was instead my heart.

He is all that I expected, a kind and gentle perfect old man, who will be great in any family. I hope for a family who seeking a small to mid-sized already made dog. Odie is really worth a second chance.

Full of Beans  -  She was the sweetest puppy, active and playful, and full of beans. A cute Collie/Shepherd mix, and only five months I was pretty certain she would find a home fairly quickly.

I agreed to take her, along with two others (check out Odie and Carl on the site, also wonderful) from another facility where they had no space. I was surprised that she had not been placed as she was so young, but it seems sometimes it's all about being in the right place at the right time when searching for a home.

It's hard to say no, and I always do my best to fit them in, but I do always need to consider there time that potentially may be spent with me, and must consider what it is I am expecting. There is always an inner debate about who can find a home and how many are here now and can I take more in. Reality is, I generally take them all, or most when asked, provided I have space, as I  see their cute faces, but always have to ensure not  to agree based only on my emotions (knowing that no can mean death to these dogs in many cases).

Mae was delivered to me on Saturday (thank you transporters) and by Monday people were already asking about her. We spayed her, and today she became available. In only hours she has been adopted. I am thankful my assumption about her finding a home quickly were accurate, as this has worked out for the best. I hope now for a short stay for her friends as it is with more adoptions that there is space to OK more to come, and to OK more is wonderful, no matter how long they stay with me.

Mable  -  Another surgery day, and another 6 new dogs altered, and once again, I am thrilled. The biggest thanks, as always, to each of you who keep it going, and of course to the team that makes it possible.

Today, in thinking I discovered there is one very special part of our team that I have never mentioned. Many of you have met her, likely stepped on her, and if you have had the pleasure of attending our facility on a surgery day, you have seen her working. It is Miss Mable, who sits patiently by the surgical door while they are on the table and knows she has a job to do. A cat who moves very little, hustles when they are placed on the floor. She rushes to them, leans on them, and warms them (some use heating pads, we have Mable lol) she cleans them, grooms them and holds them while they slowly wake. She is the best nurse ever, and they appreciate it I am sure. On an interesting note, here is where I add, nobody Mable sits with wakes up in a panic, they wake up calmly.

Her large size has us allow her to nurse them with caution, as the little guys are pretty fragile, but Mable knows to sit where it's appropriate. It is as though she was born to do it.

As I watched her today "making bread" on that large dog's butt, it occurred to me that she loves her job as much as we do.

Assuming no News Having celebrated her adoption only yesterday and noting no news was good news, seeing Shammy standing in the parking lot today made me feel bad. With only a few empty cages I was unhappy to think that Shammy was being returned. I had been so sure he was the perfect place for her. I watched them in the parking lot while waiting to open the doors at 1 pm. I watched him pet her lovingly, the whole time my heart was sinking.

He entered without her at 1 pm sharp and handed me her leash. "I have something to say to you", he started. I held my breath. "I need to thank you. I need to tell you that Lady (her new name) is the best dog ever. She and I are best friends, and I don't know how I ever got along without her". There were tears in my eyes as he spoke, and I have to admit, for the first time ever I leapt across the desk and hugged him. [Oops]

As I blog today, I must correct the blog from yesterday, I said no news was good news, but that may not be true ... good news is the best news!

Shammy - Assuming no news is good news, it may be time for me to now celebrate the adoption of sweet Shammy.

Shammy came from Quebec, not speaking English came also with illness and a chip on her shoulder. When I first met her, I must admit my reaction was 'eek', what am I going to do with that. She who needed immediate veterinary care, who would not let me in the cage with her. Although she was not lunging or biting, she sure threatened, and although I am sure her swear words were in French, I could still understand them. Shammy said get away from me, I am unhappy.

I remember feeling initially at a loss for where to start, as medicating even those who are compliant is a challenge, but knew she had come to me from those who knew I would not let her down, and I was dedicated to keeping my promise. It took two of us, and a whole lot of persuasion to get those meds into her, and slowly she gained her strength, and even more slowly we gained her trust. Days turned into weeks, and weeks months but her health returned, and our love for her grew.

Shammy became a joy to handle, and a pleasure to be around, and a loyal friend to all who knew her. However, Shammy still protected her cage, her belongings, and continued to bark and snarl at those who greeted her. Each day I rewarded a positive greeting, meeting her at the door with cookies in hand, and asking her to sit, and accept treats. In no time she greeted me properly. However, it was not me she needed to impress she had already won my heart. As time passed I grew discouraged, and Shammy was growing too fat. Persons approached, and she would bark, and they quickly moved from her sight. I began to feel no one would ever take her out for a second look, as they never got past the first one. "would you like to see the Shepherd mix out?" "no way".

Rescue offered to take her back, but fosters fell through. Torn on the decision to let her go, uncertain of what that would hold for her, I was not entirely sad when they did. Torn as I knew she could not stay behind my doors forever. All volunteers walked and loved her, and those that knew her wondered why she was still homeless.

When I first met him, my reaction was quite similar, he in his straw hat and suspenders, I think I may have also 'eeked'. However, when I watched him on his knees offering her a chance, I became very excited. When he asked for a closer look and we took her outside, and then again later, I was bursting inside. He had given her a chance at her worst behaviour to see what she could offer, as we did. There were smiles and tail wags as they walked to the car, she thrilled to be chosen and he thrilled to choosen her. The happiest of course may have been me, and as time goes by (this adoption was Friday) I grow slowly happier. All the best Shammy ... all the best!

10 Weeks and Left Outdoors - It was not the best case scenario for her, the momma, having had her third litter in 2½ years of age, nor was it the best case scenario for those pups to be 10 weeks of age and living entirely outdoors.

I am thankful this was recognized, and thankful the owner thought to seek our help. The right decision was made to have us gather them and find loving homes for all of them.

They are now dewormed, defleaed, have received a bath and the best of foods, the pups are now looking and feeling much better. Mom will be spayed tomorrow, if all is well, and although she is stressed about being homeless, she too appears to be feeling OK. I imagine being out of the mosquitoes and black flies, must make things more comfortable for all of them.

As the bugs nibbled on me while I carried the pups, I can be sure that the bug problem was quite continual, and can confirm this was equally annoying for them, and equally uncomfortable.

Mom's days of having babes are now finished. She can now start living her life for herself, and with that in mind, I am sure hoping the best of places comes for her soon.

3rd Annual Mutt Strutt - Our 3rd Annual Mutt Strutt was a great success! With over thirty participants, their support people, and their pets I am very pleased with the great turn out! Everyone did a fantastic job with raising monies, all to help us keep our operating room running. We gathered, strutted, ate together and then the fantastic prizes were given out. Everyone was smiling, and all the dogs had tails wagging. Many were enjoying Reiki, and all enjoyed time spent with persons who loved their dog.

With me was my pal Bruno, who enjoyed every moment of the spoiling he was given, he who strutted his stuff, and then soaked up all the love he was given. Watching him prance around with his head held high was the highlight of the day for me for sure. I did, however, very much enjoy seeing my pal Will, he who once nearly passed under my care after running for days in the snow, Ivory a blind and deaf Sheltie who spent weeks with us searching for a compassionate home, Hush a deaf dog who needed a special place, Curley once an older and unwanted dog, now so very much loved and cherished, Sabre once slated for death at another facility, and the many others who had been once behind my doors, who now are in loving and caring homes. There sure was a feeling of pride and relief that comes with seeing my beloved friends and with that I was already considering the day a great success.

The biggest thanks goes to my supporters, those that strutted, those that donated and gave pledges, and those who donated prizes, your support means the world to me, and can help me change the world for so many more. There is not enough thanks to give for those who will get a second chance in life. They owe you for helping me do what I do. Our top pledge sheet winners were Holly Becker with $545.00, Laura Sinclair with $440.00 and Teri and her boys with $287.00 - way to go guys!

Thank you to the Dangerfudges for all their help in the planning, set up, and their help with the BBQ, and prize gathering. Thank you to Teri, Jenny and Alicia for your help with the gathering of prizes and spreading of the details to the public. Thank you to the Wellers for your help in the packing, the set up, and the BBQ. Thank you to Loraine and Wade of Down to Earth for the Reiki you provided.

There is no doubt that we could not do what we do without each and every one of you. Your support touches our heart, and your assistance makes the job easier, and worth doing.
With the totals now in, we are in excess of 4, 000 dollars raised !! I'm jumping up and down, hooray !!

I would also like to put out a special thank you to Elaine Watson from Wiggins Accounting and Financial Services for overseeing the Registration and also Sue Watson for emceeing for the prizes.

Ear Tattoos - It has happened about a dozen times since our Shelter surgery days began, we sedate for surgery, prep, and proceed, only to discover that she is already altered. This in most cases is a cat, and in most cases one I am sure I can recognize but can't say for sure, and well, there are many ... thousands who look the same. It is then a waste of time, money and meds, and more importantly a sedation that a poor animal must do twice rather than only once.

It was decided a few weeks ago, after one I was sure I had already seen prior but attended again as a stray was again opened to find she had nothing to remove that something needed to be done to prevent it from happening again. The thought that I have had to spay a cat twice makes me quite sad, so the purchase of a tattoo kit, and instructions and directions were then given, (thank you Mr. Fudge) and I was set to ink each alter, or at least most ID that that are now fixed, and track them. There is never such a thing as too much ID!

I must admit that my first attempt had me holding my breath, and each tiny poke was quite intimidating, however, when all was said and done, I had completed five perfectly legible, and perfectly traceable, ear tattoos. Thankfully my patients slept through the whole thing, as movement sure would have made this impossible and painful for us both.

I am pleased that we can now provide this new service to the animals in our care and pleased to have learned a new skill too.

Pager Etiquette - When you contact the Shelter via our phone number you are given two options if we don't pick up the phone (this of course happens if we are busy with customers, or in the other room, or if we are not open). These options are to leave a message, and we will return your call or to page us in the event of an emergency. The wording on the machine is "...in the case of an emergency please call our pager at *******" and please remember this is for emergencies only".

I cannot state in any other way but this, but this pager is for emergencies only. Cats for adoption, dogs that are available, a dead bird on your lawn, or a smelly skunk on your deck may be urgent and important to you, and believe me I understand your need to know when we can help you, but please understand this line goes to our pocket, and no matter what time of day, or night we promptly return your call. IF we are in hot pursuit of a dog, assisting an animal in need, or assisting someone, we must stop what we are doing to call you back. Please be empathetic to the needs of those we may be otherwise assisting.

That said, when we return your call, which we do immediately, (we keep the pager and phone in the same pocket, it happens nearly simultaneously) it is helpful if after you page you are waiting by the phone. If we must wait for your answering machine to finish, and then recall, and recall again we are sometimes wasting important time (which can be used to help you if urgent too). Understand that when we call you right back and your signal is busy and we cannot get through, we must keep calling until we get through and again this wastes time.

Today, there were three pages in an hour, two for missing cats, and one about something deceased on the road. In one instance, they were on the phone. It was important enough to them that they page us, but not enough that they then stayed off the phone. As I hit redial for twenty minutes, I became quite frustrated. Then came another page, same number. This time, after making it through they became frustrated with me, in the time it took for me to reach them ... huh? When it was, I explained, was me getting a busy signal they recalled not hanging up the phone :( There annoyance and mine was easily avoided.

Thankfully there wasn't a crisis that we could not promptly attend, as this could have been much worse. But this reminded me that perhaps it was time to remind everyone to please consider what's going on on the other end when you hit the pound button.

Update Time - It's update time! With pure excitement I am pleased to update the well being of my pal little Lonely. A kitten delivered to me at a few weeks of age, no chance of survival without mom in the Shelter who came home to be with me for a while and has been bottle fed and bum wiped, cuddled and spoiled, and thank the stars, it has all been worth it.

Lonely the one and only left by his mom for reasons unknown is now eating dry food, pooping in a litter box and is tearing the place apart!

He is feeling very well and is no longer lonely. He has become a great companion to my son, and is carried in his arms most of the day, and sleeps on his head at night. He purrs when someone enters the room, and is very clearly enjoying his second chance at life.So far so good, and happily I can say soon Lonely will be looking for a home.

On this happy and thrilled note, Bruno is also doing so very well, he now romps and plays, jogs on the end of a leash and rolls for belly rubs. His tail wags bring me pure joy. Soon he will be altered, and will also be seeking his new home. A true survivor deserving of only the best, my promise to him has been to find him the home he will be spoiled in. Soon he will find it. Bruno was once a free roaming dog who ran with others in a pack, those who then chewed on him when he became weak and nearly killed him. He fought to live when there was little hope will never face those days again. A little birdie told me Bruno may even attend the Mutt Strutt to show himself off :)

Girlie is also doing well as she is gaining weight and mending. She enjoys her time outdoors, and watching the other dogs, she would really love a home with another one?? Her face however still a little swollen she is not quite at her best yet, but there is great hope that a forever home time is near. She was recently filled with quills, and infection, emaciated and having recently fed puppies surely would have passed had we not gathered her when we did, and the timing for her was so very important. I am so thankful that she is now pain free and comfortable. I have promised her that this is how life will be for her now and I intend to keep this promise.

Thank you for your support with these three, it is appreciated. Nothing makes me smile more than knowing that your support was not for nothing.

After Hour Calls - When the pager goes off at 10 pm on Sunday and it is family day and get ready for the work week night it's a bit of a run around. We at least celebrate that it's not midnight and hope it's an easy gather and return. About fifty percent of the time, calls can be straightened out over the phone (lost dog info? Advice with wildlife?) But the other half means you have to get going.

At 10 pm on a Sunday the rush is harder to do :( I opted to take the drive, as it was a stray dog already contained (I am not such a fan of running in the dark). The call was about 15 minutes away, and I arrived by 10:30 pm. I am at the door a few minutes later. Two minutes after that I was furious. I now have to vent as the dog had been returned home twenty minutes earlier!!

If you are going to page me after hours and interrupt my family time I am OK with it - this is part of the job. I understand the need for this in an emergency. However, please know it makes me very cranky when I get "oops sorry I forgot to call you, the dog has gone home". This is a wasted call which is annoying and very dissatisfying. Had another animal needed me at this time it would have waited for no reason! It's a difficult job we do, with your help it can be made a little easier.

We Have Kittens - Kittens anyone? Tell all your friends and family! Presently, I have one, two, five, seven and eight looking for homes.

All are waiting and hoping someone can take them home. As it takes many adoptions of kittens to free up a cage or two, as the calls keep pouring in with cats looking for homes, the pressure is on to have them adopted.

On this note, if you are considering a kitten please understand the urgency in which I say if you are not thinking about having this kitten altered I would rather you did not take it. I want nothing more than to run out of kittens/cats someday, but if you have any doubts that the pet population is not in crisis, come answer my phone for a few hours and listen to persons yell, scream, and beg and plead. Then spend a few hours thinking on where you can place those you have no place for.

Kittens are wonderful and fun; I love them, but would enjoy them more if they were in a loving home and scheduled to be altered.

Carebear - Today, I had a wonderful visit from "Carebear" and "Fancy's" mom and dad. I must admit when I saw them as always my heart sank, immediately sure something had gone wrong and poor Carebear after months with me and so many surgeries and so much TLC was coming back. He who meant so much to all of us, who we tried so hard to mend and then find the perfect home for was instantly in my mind, and I was afraid that I was about to have my heart broken. We love each like our own, and worry from the moment they leave forever.

Generally, no news is good news, and we tell ourselves that if we don't hear it must be all OK. It's those we see soon or hear from where there is potentially a problem. We do ask each to update us, but there are not many that do, unless something happens they are not happy with the adoption :(

When they arrived, I anticipated the worst, and braced myself as she started the story "...well Fancy was a great cat all on her own, she loved us and we loved her..." [oh no] She was "...my cat who loves me very much." [oh dear] and "...we were all very happy." [here we go bad news coming]. The tale continued with all sorts of food stories, and Fancy's fun and games and hooray for Fancy, and for this I was pleased, but all the time waiting till we got to the punch line, sure it would be BUT now ... then she started "...and then Carebear came into our lives, they did not get along..." [I am now sweating inside] but she continued and in a few moments I was filled with pride, and happy thoughts, as Carebear is working out just fine and Fancy couldn't be happier. These two call for each other when they leave the room, groom each other eat together and are inseparable. Together they are most happy, and together they are very much loved. She spoke of their treats, and their two beds, and she must pet them at the same time, and is so glad she has two hands. AND, they have sold their Florida home so they can stay with the cats!! My heart filled with happiness, and a big smile came across my face, I couldn't be happier for them.

She has promised to bring photos, and am reminding myself of this, so I can post them on the website!

Mother charged with manslaughter in dog attack
Husky attacks 3-week-old left alone in Quebec home, strapped in car seat
Last Updated: Tuesday, June 8, 2010 | 4:36 PM ET
CBC News

A 17-year-old mother was charged with manslaughter on Tuesday after a dog mauled and killed her newborn girl east of Montreal.

The teenager and her 37-year old mother were arrested late Monday after the three-week-old baby was killed by a husky inside the family home in Saint-Barnabé-Sud, near Saint-Hyacinthe.

Paramedics found the baby girl covered in deep bite marks and scratches. Police said she had been left strapped in her car seat on the main floor of the house when one of two dogs in the home attacked her.

The teen was charged in youth court because she is a minor and cannot be identified.
The woman's lawyer, André Williams, said he was "completely blown away" by the charge laid against his client and by the speed with which it was laid.

"This is a young girl who is rather fragile," he told reporters at the Saint-Hyacinthe courthouse on Tuesday.

On Tuesday afternoon, the baby's grandmother was released after the Crown decided there was not enough evidence to press charges, said the woman's lawyer, Mélissa Côté. Read more...»

Peaches - Two weeks I first saw her laying in that ditch. She apparently lived there. When I approached her she greeted me with tail wags and a roll over and wanted to love me. I was expecting her to run and dart like a wild animal as to me this is how she seemed all curled up under those trees where she could barely be seen.

She touched my soul when she peered out at me and I wanted to save her. When I heard the tale of her owners leaving her behind to fend for herself months earlier I knew I had to come back for her. It broke my heart to leave her, but I promised her I would return for her and Friday I got that chance.

Again, she offered all the love in the world to me and the biggest smile. She is now named Peaches with a kind and gentle soul. It was so darn fast that she found her new home, as it was clear others saw her kindness quickly too. Nothing could make me happier than knowing the ditch dog sleeps in a warm bed tonight!

Quill Removal - It was one messy and very time consuming surgery while we picked, plucked and removed so very many quills and parts of quills. She had antibiotics and IV on-board, as well as a whole lot of TLC and luckily she was sleeping through it all.

The only one who felt a thing was me. I am certain with each removal I squished up my face and held my breath. It was very clear that she was a dog in desperate need of help, and I was again thankful that we had gathered her.

She is now spayed and will never have to feed more pups again, and she is now less those quills and is being treated for the infection. It was much like a needle in a haystack, and in fact; it was very much a slippery, wet and smelly haystack. Thank goodness the doc has patience, and is good with gross!

Girlie is now one step closer to her happily ever after and is now racing Bruno racing to the finish line. Can't wait to see who makes it out first! I have told them both they are racing, in the hopes they may listen and try very hard to get well fast, and find those homes that will never allow them to suffer again.

Girlie - They called her Girlie, as she was one of the many girl dogs present, she the mother of many, and the third generation in the home. When I spotted her today, emaciated, and full of infection, with dozens of quills poking in her face I knew she was the one I had to take. Thank the stars her owner has offered to surrender to me most of those she has, and thankfully there was no dispute when I suggested her.

Uncertain when she tangled with that porcupine or how long she had been in such pain, the infection causing her much grief I knew it was not just today. Girlie was terrified when we approached her. I knew that if Girlie was not gathered she would be very unwell, very soon, and her life depended on it.

I do believe it was her first time leashed, as she sure fought it, it was heartbreaking to watch her struggle even knowing that it was all for the better. She bled from her nose where the quills entered and cried as we tried to touch her. Coaxing and offering soothing words was all we could offer and the promise of a better life, and to hope she understood it.

With better days ahead, and my team now taking good care of her, I now hope she mends fast, and can find a home who would not allow her to suffer.

Please keep girlie in your thoughts, and she is now another who needs good vibes sent her way. Another so deserving of so much more, I am pleased we could be there for.

Mutt Strutt - I forgot to count today, however, I can say with sure certainty we are well over 500 surgeries. Maybe even 550? Another six lives altered today, and changed for the better forever.

Today was yet another great day. Although the pleasure of seeing someone go to a fantastic home or receiving updates from someone so very loved after being homeless is certainly the best part of my job, seeing them get one step closer to that day is surely second best.

I reflected on the many in the past who had their lives saved and made better with the help of our surgery room, those who needed it to continue on, and those who had been altered so that they may no more reproduce and become more adoptable too. We have saved lives, and made lives better, and watching my team in action is pretty fantastic too.

These surgeries, and life changing procedures have been possible only through donations from each of you. To operate costs money, and thankfully your support has kept us going, for this my whole heart thanks you. At least 500 owe you who have contributed their thanks.

Today being June 1st marks 19 days until our 3rd Annual Mutt Strutt. This is our biggest fundraising event of the year. This a "strutt of mutts and their people" and brings in for us much needed monies to keep us operating.

Please consider attending at Grey Sauble Conservation on this day, from 10am until 2pm. Consider gathering pledges and supporting our cause. People who cannot attend, please consider sending in a pledge? People with the ability to donate prizes as incentives for our Strutters, please consider this as well?

I cannot do what I do without your support and I appreciate this entirely. Those who would have otherwise never made it out from behind my doors, those like:

Bruno

Carebear

Roy

Broker

Zena

and

Ivory

And the hundreds more that are so glad they have had your support!
