Chickens for Adoption - Today, for the first and second time ever in my years of animal rescue we were presented a pair of homeless chickens. These chickens beloved pets lost their home, and lucky for them were loved enough to be given a chance to continue to be pets and not someone's dinner. If their person cared enough to call, and arrange for me to help, I really could not say no. Reality is I hate saying no anyhow.

So, with that said does anyone need a pair of hens? One Bantey, one Silkie, bonded after spending four years together, want to go together. They promise to work for their food by scratching up the garden, removing bugs, and offering in exchange eggs for you to gather. A fair deal I'd say, a meal for a meal... And again I don't mean they as the meal. Please remember persons in Owen Sound and some other municipalities are not permitted chickens, but if your zoned agricultural... I'm all for it.

WE HAVE BEEN ADOPTED! Update Sep 29/11

Up for adoption one black Silkie hen, and one black Banty hen pair. They are 4 years old, bonded pair that go together. Social ladies who love people. They are not for dinner. If you of somebody who would like to adopt them, please contact the Shelter at (519) 372-1123.

Griffin Update - We have had an update on Griffin.

He is enjoying his new life! He is doing awesome, had only one accident. Had him to our vet yesterday everything looks good!

And here is another update on Benji:

I just thought I would let you know that I have met Benji and he could not have a better person to be with. He goes for walks by my house every day and is walking well on a lead. Apparently he gets to sleep on the bed. He is shy around people but will allow me to get up to him when he is in her arms. I just put my fingers up to his nose and he doesn't pull back or growl. Hides behind her legs though if you approach him. That is understandable though. He is adorable. Val

More Good News - Dogs seized in Oliphant ... Hooray hooray we did it hooray! Saturday, super busy, we placed all five "red bay" dogs. Altered, clean and safe and sound they now are in loving homes. I am thrilled that these dogs have found their homes, just as we have ten more homeless :( blog to follow.

Thinking of the positive only, I'm glad to say I have heard Southampton succeeded in placing 23. Thankfully, so many opened their heart. If only this eliminated all the homeless pets we could be truly celebrating. However, 28 is very good :)

Radio Owen Sound has a report from Monday September 26th and update on where all the dogs are.

5 of The 47 are Here - The 5 "Red Bay" or 5 from the '47 dogs that were rescued from Oliphant' are ready to go. We have named them Gruff, Griffin, Gretchen, Benji and Layla. They are clean, altered and so ready to go home.

After weeks of chaos for them and uncertainties, days of being poked and prodded, and moved around and then altered it is time to get them settled. It is time for their nightmare to end, time for them to head to a home of patience, understanding and love.

They will be needing a little TLC as they lack social skills which were never given to them. They will just be starting out their lives in a great new environment.

I'm excited to see them find their forever homes soon. They have had their vaccinations, dewormed, groomed and fixed.

I present Gruff, Griffin, Gretchen, Benji and Layla:

Gruff is 5 years - Shih Tzu

Griffin is 2 years - Yorkie/Shih Tzu

Benji is 4 years - Yorkie/ShihTzu

Gretchen is 9 months - JRT/Shih Tzu and Layla is 9 months old - Toy Poodle mix

We are open Monday to Friday 1pm to 7pm and Saturday 9am to 5pm. Please phone (519) 372-1123 if you have any questions.

Bathed, Vaccinated and Ready to Go - Well the three little scruffy dogs from Red Bay as they were known, are now named Gruff, Benji and Griffin. They were vaccinated, dewormed, then they were bathed, soaked and bathed and soaked and bathed and soaked again.

It seems that living in your feces for years can colour your fur :( I believe a hair cut is likely in order.  However, they sure smell a whole lot better! This, just in time as their lady friends have arrived.

47 Dogs Taken - On August 30th, 47 dogs were seized in Oliphant and I blogged about this disturbing situation where they were gathered from a home. Since this date, I wondered, worried, and hoped for the best knowing the challenges in housing multiple dogs, and re-homing them. I had the pleasure in meeting them a short while later, and of course they warmed my heart, and hurt my soul. With this meeting I offered to assist in any way possible, and promised the dogs I spoke to that if I could I would.

Today, we obtained 3 dirty, skinny and bad haired Shihpoo, Yorkipoo styled dogs, male. These three ranging in age from 4-7 years. Tomorrow, I will return for a few more. It is a heartbreaker to select only a few (in fact I don't select, don't have the heart for it, and instead accept what has been chosen) but I am assured all will find homes. But there is soooo many! If you are considering adopting, please consider this timing, if you know those that are looking, please mention these to them ... or another. With adoptions only we can make room for more, and these are urgently needing.

Another Unknown Dog Bite
Radio Owen Sound
Dog Bite in Kincardine
by Kevin Bernard

The Grey Bruce Health Unit is trying to find the owner of a dog involved in a biting incident in Kincardine.

It happened around 3 PM on Wednesday -- when a woman approached a Black Labrador Retriever in a vehicle in the Kincardine Foodland parking lot.

When the woman reached into the car to attempt to pet the dog, it bit her.

Staff of the Grey Bruce Health Unit need to confirm that the dog is not infectious with rabies.

By verifying the health of the dog, the victim can avoid receiving post-exposure rabies treatment.

Andrew Barton at the Health unit says this incident also reinforces the importance of not approaching unfamiliar animals.

If you have any information related to this incident, please contact the Grey Bruce Health Unit at 519-376-9420.

Dog dies

A 43 year old Owen Sound resident is facing charges after an incident involving another dog owner.

City police say a 19 year old man was out rollerblading with his leashed husky yesterday afternoon on 3rd Avenue East in the 700 block...when all of a sudden they were being chased by a bullmastiff ....loose on his property.

The dog forced the rollerblader to dart between a couple of parked cars and into oncoming traffic.

The extent of the man's injuruies are unknown but its believed they're non life threatening. However his husky was killed.

The owner of the bullmastiff has been charged under the city's bylaw act.

Adoption Updates - Upon request of the Mix Morning Zoo, an update for one special guest, and one of my favourite guests has come through. Although, normally, I would ask you to tune in to listen, I was so thrilled I had to share. Here is an update from Bruno's mom:

Hi Renee, Todd and the rest of the shelter gang! I read the blog and thought you might like to hear about how Bruno is doing. Bruno is wonderful. He walks on a leash without pulling, never gets into the garbage, always greets me at the door when I come home from work with a wagging tail, whimpers of greeting and a cold wet nose up the skirt! He has developed a special bond with Dan, ever since the day that Dan carried him over the highway overpass (Bruno is afraid of bridges, sewers and culverts). He is an amazingly laid back dog and has adopted the “babysitter” role in our pack, tolerating Sophie’s dress up games and imagination with love and good humour. He has become the mascot of Mr. Kennedy’s grade 4 class, with little girls singing songs they wrote for him and saving him their lunch leftovers. I am also amazed at how well our 3 cats have accepted Bruno to the family. When Bruno and I come home from our morning walks our one cat Toes is always waiting for us, prancing up to us and rubbing his body all over Bruno. Sometimes, it almost looks like Bruno is embarrassed by the attention he is receiving (Toes is pretty enthusiastic). Bruno lives the life that all rescued dogs deserve. Thanks again and again for giving him the chance to survive and flourish, the chance for my husband to experience the loyalty and devotion that humans can only experience from a canine companion, the chance for my daughter to have a sibling (however furry he may be), and for me especially, thanks for giving me a dog to walk with in the evenings, a friend to talk to when no one else will listen, and a willing accomplice in my adventures around the Waterloo Region. ~ Claire D.

Zoo Adoptions - Are you the proud pet parent of a pet that has been show cased on the Mix Morning Zoo? A dog perhaps - a puppy, a kitten or cat, a hamster, a guinea pig, or how about the Big Igg?

The Mix Morning Zoo wants to hear from you! Drop me a message, an email perhaps, or call in. Bayshore Broadcasting, specifically, the Mix Morning Zoo on 106.5 FM has run each Friday for over 4 years. Hundreds of pets have been show cased, and all have found homes. It is perhaps time now to remember them, celebrate your union and update listeners on just how wonderful things have been.

We all love happy tails, you know it's my favourite part (tales and tails). Please share your pet with us ... pictures and updates would be wonderful :) How about putting them in the 2012 calendar?

Mabel - There is a dark cloud hanging over the Shelter tonight. A bright light who warmed our hearts has gone out!

A few years ago a "stray" cat was delivered by someone who claimed she needed to die. An epileptic cat, who seizured with too much stimulation, who was badly matted, as grooming forced her to have tremors, and who quite elderly may have already lived her nine lives. We were blessed it seems as her circumstance of "stray" which forced us to keep her. We agreed to watch her carefully for signs of distress and discomfort while she waited her reclaiming period. This cat used this time to crawl into our hearts.

She greeted us with purrs, and whole body rolls, and when she looked at us, it was although she peered into our souls. Days turned into weeks, weeks into months, and we watched and we fell in love. Mabel was a cat like no other. Those who knew her know this to be true. She who greeted you at the door and then promptly placed herself on/or under your feet to ensure you stopped to speak to her. If I had a dollar for every time Mabel was stepped on I could retire!

She became a beloved friend to the homeless and was often seen perched outside their cages, as though assuring them (and randomly stealing a snack), and she covered them with her body when they recovered from surgery, grooming them as they came awake.

Dogs of all sizes, cats and kittens too, became patients of nurse Ruby Mabel. She tattered, matted and herself unwell spent hours tending to them. It was heartwarming, and like nothing I had been blessed to see. As time rolled by and her health began to fail, Mabel continued to support those who needed her despite her ailments.

Click here to read the Bruno blog...»

Last surgery day Mabel sat alone, and I knew her time was near. Today, we said goodbye to a dear friend who will be remembered always. It may be strange to say I will use her as an example as a benevolent cat. But, I hope to be such a giving soul and hold her dear. Rest in peace Ruby Mabel.

Dog Bite Signs - After posting, yet another, news report of a person bitten, and after recording another three bites this week, I have decided to take a minute to chat about bite prevention again.

Sadly, when a bite occurs, there is only bad things that follow, for the dog, the owner, and the person bitten. Even more sad is the reality that each bite is preventable. I offer a bite prevention course for adults, and for children and unfortunately few use it. I am willing to provide suggestions, and tips on keeping people and pets safe and most only question me after its too late.

We all know (or most know) that a dog may bite when protecting its home, its belongings, items of importance (i.e., food bowl dog treats). We know (or most know) that a dog may bite when in pain, or when in a heated debate with another dog, or animal. However, it is often forgotten that a dog is an animal. We have humanized them, but in reality, they are still a canine and a canine can bite when under stress. This bite, a natural reaction. Not appropriate, not permitted, but entirely natural.

Do you know how to recognize signs of stress? There are many signs which you may miss. Here is a list:

  • activity increase or decrease

  • destructive behavior, inappropriate urinating, defecating, or the shredding of items

  • shedding

  • sneezing

  • vomiting

  • nose drip

  • freezing (as in still standing)

  • growls, teeth baring

  • tense body postures

  • dander increases

  • diarrhea

  • drooling

  • eyes wide set

  • eyes held shut tight

  • food increase

  • food decrease

  • yawning

  • lip licking

  • pacing

  • panting

  • scratching

  • avoiding eye contact

  • hunched over appearance

  • tail held low

  • tail held high

  • inability to respond to cues

  • furrowed brow

  • shaking as though shaking water off

  • avoidance

If you notice changes in your dogs behavior in a situation which is new, recognize your dog is showing you signs of stress. He is exhibiting his displeasure. Remove him from the situation immediately, or proceed with caution. At this point, it is essential that dog does not allow his anxiety to increase, as his release may be with a bite.

Imagine your most stressful moment, and imagine then being approached by someone inappropriately, what happens ... you betcha ... we snap.

Best Friends - The best part of my job is uniting pets with their new family. The updates I receive make the job, which is often not so pleasant, sooo worth while. Each update warms my heart, as each has been a pet I have also loved. I get great joy from watching people love their pets, and when man's best friend is really his best friend I am thrilled.

It is with this in mind that I announce the 6th Annual Calendar Contest. This years' theme is 'Best Friends'. Officially starting today, September 1st, and running through to September 30th [midnight]. Get started with those pictures and start sending them in.

Admission is $15.00 per picture and remember there is always the voting, for $1.00 each, to see who is going to be on the front of the calendar. We are getting better and better every year and I am excited to see the pictures and get this underway! I want to see your pet's 'best friend'! All pets may enter!

We are presently looking for sponsors. For $100.00 this will give the sponsor a business card size ad for the whole month on the calendar.

I will need help judging these great pics! Thankfully the votes make my job of picking a little easier, as the call is yours, however, I need you to get voting! I am attached to every one of them, as I know many personally having had many live with me (behind the shelter doors) while they waited for new homes. Those that were not "my pets" are still many I am fond of. My heart pulls at those I know, and my call would be biased, so I need you to do your part to help make it fair. We will start getting those pictures up soon and you can go on-line and choose your favourites by voting to let me know! The top entries get calendar spots, and the highest the cover, and bragging rights.

You can use our Paypal 'donation button' to pay and forward your pictures to me at osas@bmts.com. Good luck everyone! Click this link to check out the info...»
