...Of course, Otto Hahn's accomplishments do
not stop at his discovery of nuclear fission! Here are some of his other notable
accomplishments:
Hahn's Discovery of Radiothorium:
...Hahn, an organic chemist, was very surprised
when he was told to study radioactivity, but it seems that it all worked out
in the end. While working with William Ramsay, Hahn was required to isolate
radium from barium salts. He succeeded, and through his great skills realized
that he found a new radioactive element, radiothorium.1
Hahn's Discovery of Radioactinium and Thorium C:
...Hahn went to Montreal to study with Ernest
Rutherford, due to the advice of Ramsay. While in Canada with Rutherford,
Hahn was able to discover another radioactive element, radioactinium. Shortly
afterwards, after helping Rutherford with his research on alpha decay, Hahn
was able to find an addition product of radioactive decay, Thorium C. Rutherford
praised him highly for all of his work.1
