Installing Insulation and Vapour
Barrier
The interior of dome shell was insulated with 3.5 inch
thick R13.5 Roxul "Flexibatt" insulation between the studs. Combined
with the 2 inches of exterior foam insulation, this brought the shell
insulation value up to about R28, comparable to standard R2000 wall
insulation ratings. The advantage of using interior and exterior
insulation is that the exterior insulation minimizes thermal bridging
through the studs. As you can see in these pictures, if only interior
insulation is used, it would result in a significant heat loss. 6 mil
polyethylene vapour barrier was carefully installed over the
insulation, and all seams were sealed with Acoustical Sealant, to
make as tight a seal as possible.
Drywalling around the chimney was
installed early, but the remainder awaited until most of the
insulation and vapour barrier was complete.
