Friday, April-03-09 Hi Renee, just a quick note about ‘Max.’ After waiting about two years after our last pet died, we finally realized what a big part of our life was missing. We visited the Owen Sound shelter on a November 2000 afternoon to explore the possibility of adopting a dog. You introduced us to Max, a three year old, Border Collie / Lab mix. Audrey was walking with the assistance of a cane; but was aware that she would eventually be in a wheel chair... so we certainly had to be prepared to take care of Max as her condition changed. We were initially concerned about how he would adapt to our home and lifestyle. We were also concerned that because we had given away all our dog stuff in preparation for a move into a new home that we had nothing for Max. You let us know the ‘Pet Value’ was open til 9pm, so we headed there immediately. We stocked up, even with toys, and headed for Max’ new home. He carefully checked out the house; but was concerned about any doors that were closed. After opening them for him, he started to run up and down the hall, obviously being aware that this place would be his. And like they say, “the rest is history.” Max became known by neighbours and friends in the community. He travelled through all of the eastern provinces with us and our trailer and was never a concern or problem. He was always concerned about Audrey and stayed by her, especially if he didn’t recognize or know visitors. He had quiet a sense of humour and would play even when nearing his life’s end. Unfortunately, his cancer overcame his resistance and he died on March 31, 2009. We have lost a great friend. When time has healed our loss, we will undoubtedly adopt another pet. We extend both congratulations and our very best wishes on your tenth anniversary Audrey Cotton and Art Starr |
