Motorcycle Maintenance DIY

I ride a 1982 Honda CB650SC Nighthawk, Purchased in June '98 with 42000km. The '82 Nighthawk came standard with Dual Front disk brakes, and Air adjustable Forks. The previous owner added an Invader fairing, and Krauser removable road cases. The stock 4 into 4 exhaust has been replaced with a 4 into 1 pipe.

The first summer I had her, she wasn't a very good ride, so I gave her the name Horse. The engine would bog down at 100kph. The CB650 series has four carbs to feed the four inline cylinders. Between the carbs are little rubber connecting 'T' shape pipes. If your CB lags and has a lousy top end, replace these 'T' pipes. When they crack, the resulting vacuum leak starves the machine of fuel.

Never being terribly mechanically inclined, I took up the challenge to find some life in Horse. Besides it gave me a good excuse to buy a whole boatload of new really cool tools. Under the watchfull eye of a heavy diesel mechanic, I pulled the head to get two seized plugs out. After replacing the top end seals, and two seized spark plugs, Horse now gets up to 170kph.

In July/August 1999, I took horse on vacation to Sydney NS, and then Cornerbrook NFLD, hitting Prince Edward Island on the return trip. In total the trip covered 6000km. Horse had no mechanical failures enroute. In Sydney I had the rear tire replaced and I changed the chain when I got home.

The first four pictures were taken with a digital still camera at my office. The bottom picture was sent to me by another Nighthawk owner. My sincere thanks to Scott Rummel of Pitsburgh, PA.
