Hi All.......FYI.....

All aboard!  Hop on the Peace Bus to Ottawa for a Peace Rally to protest CANSEC, Canada's largest military weapons bazaar!  The rally will include music, speakers, poetry and more! Details here:
http://coat.ncf.ca/CANSEC2010/Rally.htm

Thousands of buyers, sellers, users and promoters of the latest technologies for war and repression will be rubbing shoulders at this huge, private war-industry event. Cloaking themselves behind a wall of deceptive euphemisms, like "defence" and "security," hundreds of highly-profitable Canadian corporations will showcase their deadly wares.
Bring something to decorate the fence around the CANSEC!
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?v=info&ref=ts&gid=116566681687834#

CANSEC exhibitors manufacture various cutting-edge technologies from air-launched missiles and armoured battle vehicles, to high-tech electronics for the world's deadliest warplanes, multi-million dollar gizmos for the militarisation of space, automatic weapons and tear-gas rifles.

The Rally for Peace While a who's who of Canada's military-industrial-political complex, and their closest foreign friends, stage their fancy-dress dinner inside CANSEC, we'll hold a large rally for peace outside. CANSEC organisers say their gala reception is "designed to optimize interactions with current and potential contacts, clients and stakeholders." We too will be "optimising interactions" with friends and fellow activists in the struggles for peace, the environment, human rights, democracy and Third-World solidarity. Please join us!

Besides the Rally for Peace (5-7 pm), there will also be other activities and events during the day on June 2 and 3 outside the gates to the CANSEC weapons bazaar.

WHAT IS FREE FALL WRITING?

This is a writing technique that can banish writers block forever. It is also used to retrieve material buried so deep in one’s conscious memory that is difficult to access. It can be used to express feelings with just the right words, or it may bring back an incident that, put in another setting, can give meaning and life to what you are writing. It helps to bring out your own voice, where intellectually conscious writing, although it can be very good, tends to imitate the style of others. It can help develop your own style and imagery. When we write Freefall

we come very close to reliving the original moment/feeling/experience so that your writing tends to be more vivid and richer. Freefall helps you to get to the point where your writing will flow smoothly and effortlessly.

JORDAN BROADWORTH: Survey

The death of painting is one of painting’s more enduring themes. The story of the medium’s demise and rebirth has been repeated, retold and reenacted so often that it underlies the breadth of contemporary practice. With death and resurrection built into its foundation, collapse anticipates reinvention and triumph chases ruin. Within this complexity painting’s failures and inadequacies are as valid a starting point and as rich in potential as its strengths and high-water-marks.

Influenced by John Cage, (‘We are involved in life that passes understanding and our highest business is our daily life.”)
Broadwoth’s early paintings incorporated many transient, found elements. The lines in this work came from knot-tying diagrams. The wooden inserts were made from discarded easels that once belonged to institutions where he had studied. Marks and patterns were created with industrial cast-offs from various factories he had worked. Gingerbread motifs from houses he had lived in also made their way into these paintings. The work of the past decade has focused on the nature of gesture and the role of the signature. Broadworth collects, fragments and reorders signatures to form painterly building blocks. Using an additive-subtractive painting process, the presence of the gesture is revealed through absence. The play between positive and negative space makes implicit both what remains and that which has been removed.

Painting is not limited to concepts of itself; rather it is intrinsically linked to larger concepts. Broadworth’s work has been an ongoing investigation into why building-up necessitates taking-down and how absence haunts the structures of vision.  Painting is a tech-less medium born of immediate experience. We live in a world increasingly mediated by technology. Broadworth tries to bridge the gap.

Jordan Broadworth was born in Esquesing, Ontario in 1968. Broadworth studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (BFA 1992) prior to graduating from the University of Guelph's Master of Fine Art program in 1996. His work has been exhibited in numerous commercial and public galleries across Canada and the US. Reviews and articles on Broadworth have appeared in The Globe and Mail, The Hudson Review, New York Times, Canadian Art Magazine, C international and the Brooklyn Rail. Broadworth was featured in Roald Nasgaard’s ‘Abstract Painting in Canada’.  His paintings are included in public collections across Canada and private collections in Canada, the United States, Britain, and Germany.
