St. Edmund's Church - Tobermory

ANGLICAN PARISH OF THE BRUCE PENINSULA

In the late 1950's it became apparent that Tobermory was growing and that an Anglican Church was needed not only to serve the residents and cottagers, but also the influx of tourists coming to the area by car and boat during the summer months. Under the direction of the Bishop of Huron Diocese, The Right Rev. G.N. Luxton, a survey was made. It was completed in 1958 and a Church was built.

St. Edmund's Church is situated at the tip of the Bruce Peninsula, at the end of Highway 6 and on the shore of Georgian Bay. It was built in the Fall of 1959; Dedicated on July 17th, 1960 by the Rt. Rev. G.N. Luxton, Bishop of Huron and Consecrated by the Rt. Rev. H.F. Appleyard on June 13th, 1971.

We are grateful to the founding members who included in the building an attached cottage which has been in frequent use throughout the past 30 years. The church has been well maintained. It has comfortable seating for 80 people. There is an Allen Organ with a Smart Recorder which allows us to have music throughout the year when our summer organist (a cottager) is unavailable.

The Reredos at St. Edmund's is a unique and beautiful mosaic designed and created by Hershal Hamilton. It was given in memory of his father, The Rev. T. J. Hamilton who was the first school master in Tobermory. It depicts Jesus, on the shore of Lake Galilee, calling a disciple to "Follow me".

A Chancel Guild was formed in 1960 and the beautiful altar linens and hangings were made by it's members. They continue to be used and greatly enrich our worship.

A belfry was erected in 1983 after many years of discussion.

The Parish Hall is well used throughout the year. There is a year round congregation of 20 people who are all very involved in the parish community. When the warm weather comes our congregation swells with cottagers and tourists to up to 75 on some Sundays.
