Born a Newfoundlander, Carolyn Muir Helfenstein began teaching at the age of seventeen in a one-room schoolhouse near King City, Ontario. Two years later she attended Toronto Teachers’ College, then taught in the Toronto area.

Carol and her husband, Harry, purchased a Bruce County dairy farm in 1963. With their three children, they worked the land and cared for their high-producing herd of purebred Holsteins. When opportunities presented themselves—hosting exchange students, breeding and showing Old English Sheepdogs, and then buying a small-town weekly paper—the Helfensteins approached each adventure saying,“Why Not?”

In twelve years of publishing, The Teeswater News staff together won fifteen awards in province-wide competitions. Carol served on the boards of provincial and national community newspaper associations.

“As reporter and feature writer, I interviewed amazing rural people,” she says. “Our papers presented their stories, showing their strength, resiliency, and sense of adventure. I hope this book records the same characteristics, not just of our paper, but of many small-town weeklies.”
